Time - A Poem

12/4/2019

A poem about growing older and how life changes.

*

Behind closed lids I remember the walks,
As adventures, and the dinners,
Were banquets. An abandoned park,
Became a moonlit cruise, down a silvery, forgotten path.

After the shutters are drawn, I remember,
When each minute was a precious capsule of time,
So unique that it could never be replicated,
Or forgotten.

I remember a necessity, to be,
At your side. And the great strength of will,
Required to pull away. Such honest certainty,
And devotion, which age demotes to foolishness and weakness.

I fear I am becoming an old, cold husk.
No longer excited by simple touch.
Or captivated by the purpose of admirable glances.
Feeling, that with every year, another ounce of magic is lost from the world.

When the lights came on, I remember,
A shadow, lurking. Behind every victory
And every defeat. Observing every change and growth,
Staining the corners of my mind, was you.

I fear I am becoming bitter, and closing the doors,
To trust. A wandering child who has lost her way,
Searching for the sunrise. I remember when you disappeared,
You misplaced my heart and forgot to leave a map.

How have I traded the roar of the sea,
For the lap of a lake. And stumbled into,
The natural footholds carved out by time,
Waiting for adventure to sweep away my feet.
